The concluding lecture of our series paying tribute to Professor Bill Shaw, the founding editor of Theology in Scotland, will be delivered by Dr Joanna Leidenhag.

Her lecture is entitled “For the creation waits with eager longing ...”: Panpsychism and the Problem of Evil".

Using Romans 8 as its springboard, this lecture provides a re-evaluation of Christian responses to the problem of evil, taking into account the pain and longing of non-human creation. Dr Leidenhag employs the philosophy of panpsychism, which is the idea that consciousness is fundamental and ubiquitous throughout the universe, to articulate the cosmic scope of the Christian gospel.

Dr Leidenhag is Associate Professor in Theology and Philosophy at the University of Leeds. She completed her doctoral research at the University of Edinburgh and worked for four years at the University of St Andrews. She is the author of two monographs, Minding Creation: Theological Panpsychism and the Doctrine of Creation (Bloomsbury/T&T Clark, 2021) and Science-engaged Theology (Cambridge University Press, 2023 – co-authored with Dr John Perry), and over 30 published articles/essays.
