Abstract

Scotland’s mental health landscape is shaped by a convergence of historical, cultural, and socio‑economic pressures that have led the Royal College of Psychiatrists in Scotland to describe the current situation in 2026 as a ‘mental health emergency’. Intergenerational trauma, sectarian legacies, rural isolation, and the aftermath of industrial decline all contribute to a uniquely Scottish context of mental health outcomes and create disproportionate barriers to support. Against this backdrop, this issue of Theology in Scotland offers fresh perspectives and interpretive tools that will deepen understanding and engagement. Together, they form a distinctly Scottish and deeply needed intervention in the wider conversation between theology and mental health.
