Abstract

The idea of writing this reflective piece emerged from a period of thoughtful discussion within the Guntrip Trust, as to how its resources might continue to be used in appropriate and effective ways. Harry Guntrip (1901–1975) was a Congregational minister in Leeds who went on to become one of the leading British psychoanalytic practitioners and thinkers of the twentieth century. In challenging and testing times, people often ask deep, existential questions about what is happening, sometimes even fearing for the future. The psychological effects of trauma, loss, and even change can be considerable. This article, drawing on the author’s personal experience of psychotherapy, will reference Guntrip’s work and explore how psychoanalytic thinking may be useful in troubled times, outlining the resources that the Guntrip Trust continues to offer ministers.
