About the Journal
Martyria traces its roots to 2019, when it was first founded as The Heretic by Anna Haynes—then School President of Divinity and Editor-in-Chief. Between 2020 and 2023, the journal published three issues showcasing short-form undergraduate research in Divinity. While these early editions reflected genuine enthusiasm for student scholarship, reliance on a small volunteer base made continued publication challenging.
In 2025, the journal was re-founded as Martyria by Wilson Sugeng and Maria de Feo—a new chapter grounded in the same aims as The Heretic but guided by a renewed structure and vision. The rebranding reflects a comprehensive strategic refresh designed to make the journal sustainable, inclusive, and academically rigorous through:
- Recruitment of a larger and more diverse 17-person editorial team.
- Structured editorial training and clear review and publication guidelines.
- Transparent planning and workflow.
- Active outreach and publicity to other Schools, societies, and universities.
Focus and scope
We aim to carry forward St Mary’s College’s 500-year tradition of studying the Divine by accepting papers in the following areas:
- Biblical Studies and Languages
- Systematic and Philosophical Theology
- Historical Theology and Church History
- Religion and its intersections with Politics or Science
As a College-sponsored initiative, we are limiting this scope primarily (though not exclusively) to publishing research in the study of Divinity as opposed to comparative religion in order to reflect the specific research focuses and training provided by the St Andrews School of Divinity.
Review policy
Accepted papers undergo two rounds of double-blind peer review by select matriculated students of the University of St Andrews.
