Martyria (formerly The Heretic) is the student-run Biblical Studies and Theology journal of the University of St Andrews's School of Divinity. Established in 2019 and rebranded in 2025, it publishes original research in Biblical Studies, Theology, Church History, and Religion in relation to Politics and Science. The journal accepts submissions from undergraduates, recent graduates, and early postgraduates for inclusion in its annual peer-reviewed issue.
Housed in the University of St Andrews's St Mary's College, Martyria reflects the distinct academic culture of the School of Divinity, which primarily engages in the study of Divinity within a modern, non-sectarian university. The journal’s name derives from the Ancient Greek μαρτυρία (martyria), meaning testimony, witness, or evidence. The name and logo also honours Patrick Hamilton, the first martyr of the Scottish Reformation, who was executed in St Andrews for witnessing to his faith.
Submissions are now open for the 1st edition of Martyria.
